Light-based Treatments:
Laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) can be used to treat small spider veins and facial redness. Pulses of light energy are directed through the skin at the blood vessels. The hemoglobin in these vessels absorbs this energy in the form of heat and cauterizes the vessels closed. These forms of treatment can be quite effective for facial veins but are considerably less well suited to leg veins. Most practioners still find sclerotherapy to be the most successful treatment for small veins of the legs.

Possible complications of light based treatments are skin burns, blistering, purpura (bruising), and scarring.
